Fighting more aggressively than usual, Mayweather overcame a near knockdown in the second round Saturday night to dominate the rest of the way and win a lopsided 12-round decision over Shane Mosley in their welterweight showdown.

Boxing’s biggest box office draw remained undefeated in 41 fights, but not before giving his fans and his corner a scare when a right hand to the side of his head buckled his knees a minute into the second, and he had to grab Mosley to avoid going down. Mosley landed another right later in the round, but the rest of the night belonged to Mayweather.

Fighting before a star-studded crowd that included Muhammad Ali, Mayweather never came close to dropping Mosley, but landed so many more punches that the outcome wasn’t in doubt past the middle rounds. He had an answer for everything Mosley tried to do, landing right hands to the head seemingly at will as the fight progressed.

Top Ranks Chairman/Promoter Bob Arum thinks that Joshua Clottey will be more difficult opponent for Manny Pacquiao compare to Miguel Cotto last four months ago. “This Fight gonna be harder than Cotto fight”, said the veteran boxing promoter, who came along the way from his cozy Top Rank office to attend for Pacquiao’s media day workout at the Wildcard gym in Hollywood on Wednesday.

Bob Arum compares the durability of Clottey to Cotto. He Explain that the Puerto Rican’s durability has been questionable since losing to Antonio Margarito two years ago for the World Boxing Association(WBA) welterweight crown and then later, struggling off with a win over Clottey.

The 31-year old Pacquiao hacked out a 12-round stoppage over the Puerto Rican to wrest the WBO 147-pound title belt in a match where the Filipino suffered a swollen right hand, a deep gash under his left eye and a broken right eardrum.

Still, it would take a lot for the current pound-for-pound fighter in the world to get past his 32-year old challenger.

The 33-year-old Clottey has a record of 35-3 with 20 KOs. He is a tough, physical pressure fighter who stalks his opponents behind a tight, high-handed defense.

His most recent fight was in June against Miguel Cotto. He lost a split-decision in a fight in which many thought he was punked by the judges.

He also lost by decision to Antonio Margarito in 2006. He had won the early rounds before breaking his hand in the fourth. Perhaps if that hand had been wrapped by the trainer of his opponent, the injury could have been avoided.

In a November fight with Miguel Cotto, after a competitive first five rounds during which Manny dropped Cotto twice, Pacquiao reached cruising speed and began to dominate, winning by 12th-round TKO.

This fight came, of course, after Pacquiao stuck Ricky Hatton like a Pamplona Bull putting its horn up the ass of a moron who had the bright idea of trying to run with it through the streets of Spain.

Pacquiao’s shots will bounce off the gloves and the hard head of Clottey without making a dent. If anything, I see Clottey smiling though his gloves at Pacquiao after being hit with his shots, letting him know that he’s not affected by his shots. In the meantime, Clottey will continue to walk Pacquiao down and rain hooks and right hands on Pacquiao.

I see this fight getting quickly out of hand early on after Pacquiao sees that his punches have no effect on Clottey. I’d say by the 3rd or 4th round, Clottey will start softening Pacquiao up with laser right hands to the head that will have Pacquiao face starting to bruise and turn red. Freddie Roach, Pacquiao’s trainer, will frantically bark at him telling him to stay away from Clottey’s massive power shots.

But instead of playing it safe on the outside, Pacquiao will tempt fate by going straight into the teeth of Clottey’s offense and find himself taking withering fire from all angles from the bigger and stronger Clottey. Things will quickly get out of hand at that point with Clottey backing a now retreating Pacquiao across the ring hammering him with shot after shot to the head.

Antonio Margarito took a pass on fighting Sugar Shane Mosley. But fight fans shouldn’t cry a river, as a pretty decent Plan B has been hatched. WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto has stepped up, and agreed to fight SSM on January 24.

The fight has been agreed to, in principle, and will take place on in either Las Vegas or New York.

The 25-year-old Berto (23-0) told TSS that he’s pumped up for the scrap, and thinks the style matchup will give fans good bang for their buck. The fight will run on "free" HBO.

“I’m an exciting fighter, and I need to be fighting exciting opponents,” said Berto, who acknowledged that he’s itching to test himself and take on a superstar. “Me and Mosley have similar styles, we get touched and we give back two, three, four shots. He has speed and power like me. People had been talking about Shane against Floyd Mayweather. This is the next best thing.”

The 37-year-old Mosley (45-5) told TSS that some Ts need to be crossed, but he is pretty certain the old guard versus new guard tussle will take place. He applauds Berto for taking the match. “Accepting a fight like this, it’s the mark of a true warrior,” he said, as he offered the theory that Margarito’s decision not to fight him came more from promoter Bob Arum than himself.

When asked to compare Berto to someone he’s taken on in his 15-year pro career, he didn’t hesitate. “Myself. I told Richard Schaefer and Eric Gomez that this fight is probably harder for me than Margarito.”

Promoter Bob Arum says if that doesn’t happen by Thursday, the proposed March 13 fight that would have likely been the richest ever in boxing is over.

Arum accused Mayweather’s camp of raising the issue not because they were worried about Pacquiao taking performance-enhancing substances, but because Mayweather never wanted to fight in the first place.

Robert Stieglitz is set to make the first defense of his super middleweight title against dangerous slugger Edison Miranda. The fight will take place on January 9 in Germany, and will be televised in Germany on ZDF.

Miranda is a solid B-level fighter, and in retrospect, none of his losses look particularly bad. In his first loss, he fought a very close fight with Arthur Abraham where a lot of folks thought he was robbed of a knockout victory due to poor refereeing. In his other three losses, he was dominated, but all of the losses were to top guys. Kelly Pavlik laid out the gameplan to beat Miranda, beating him to the punch and outworking him with hard shots until he was TKOed. After that, Arthur Abraham followed the same gameplan in a rematch where Miranda unsurprisingly won the first couple rounds before Abraham turned on the gas and knocked him out. Most recently, Miranda lost a wide decision to Andre Ward, which doesn't look too bad after the way Ward dominated Mikkel Kessler. He does also hold good wins over Allan Green and Howard Eastman. More recently, Miranda has been retooling, picking up a new trainer and a new promoter.

Stieglitz is a bit of a middling fighter who works hard and comes to fight, but who has fairly average talent. He recently won the belt against Karoly Balzsay in a fight where Balzsay was leading at the point where his stamina failed him, and Stieglitz was able to score a TKO on the hapless Hungarian in the late rounds.

The 175-pound victory was the fourth straight for the Haitian-born Pascal (25-1, 16 knockouts) since December of 2008, when he lost a unanimous decision to England's Carl Froch (26-0, 20 KOs) in their clash for the vacant WBC super middleweight (168 pounds) title.

The 27-year-old Pascal overcame an apparent shoulder injury against 31-year-old Diaconu (26-2, 15 KOs), winning, 117-111, on the cards of Julie Lederman and Claude Paquette, and, 118-110, on that of Dick Flaherty.

After stopping Pablo Daniel Zamora Nievas in the fifth-round of his final, super middleweight bout in April of 2009, Pascal rose to light heavyweight, where he decisioned Diaconu, 115-112, 116-112, and, 1116-111, two months later for his current WBC crown.

Paul Williams is among the top ten pound-for-pound fighters in the world but comparatively little known Sergio Martinez gave the Punisher all he could handle last night in Atlantic City. In fact, were it not for one incompetent judge, Martinez could have earned a well-deserved draw.

Both fighters were knocked down in round one and that set the stage for an action-packed fight-of-the-year candidate. Williams was generally the aggressor but Martinez landed the cleaner, harder shots. Williams threw more punches but Martinez was more accurate. Both fighters demonstrated great skill and heart throughout. When the scores were totaled after 12 rounds, the decision could have gone either way and it would have been tough to argue with a draw. Two judges got it about right at 114-114 (by Julie Lederman) and 115-113 (by Lynne Carter) for Williams. The third judge, Pierre Benoist, turned in a ridiculous 119-110 for Williams - calling the first round even, giving the second to Martinez and then scoring all of the remaining ten rounds 10-9 for Williams. Some judges tend to prefer the more aggressive fighter but they're supposed to reward effective aggressiveness. While Benoist's scorecard was a disgrace, it does not take away from an incredible performance by two great fighters. No one else between 147 and 160 pounds is going to be in a hurry to get in the ring with either Williams or Martinez so a rematch - hopefully with three competent judges - is entirely possible.

On the undercard, heavyweight contender Chris Arreola scored a fourth round TKO over a game but undersized Brian Minto, who was giving up five inches in height and reach (plus 45 pounds in weight) to Arreola. Arreola talks a good game about how hard he works in the gym ... yet his weight continues to rise. He weighed a jiggly 251 in his September TKO loss to Vitali Klitschko. This time? A career high 263. If Minto was Arreola's size, this fight could have gone either way.

Elsewhere, WBA super lightweight champ Amir Khan needed just 76 seconds to destroy previously undefeated Dmitiry Salita. Khan, defending his title for the first time in front of a supportive crowd in Newcastle, England, dropped Salita with the first punch he threw and knocked him down two more times before the fight was stopped.

Mayweather - Pacquiao Deal

Manny Pacquiao's promoter, Top Rank's Bob Arum, will give his fighter a larger guaranted purse than originally agreed upon, and Arum has been contacted by Atlanta Falcon's Georgia Dome regarding the potential for being a site for the bout.

The Filiicon's adviser, Michael Konz, said that Arum has sweetened the deal for Pacquiao (50-3-2, 38 knockouts), who earned his unprecedented seventh wolrd title in as manymany classes with his 12th-round, technical knockout victory over the WBO welterweight (147 pounds) champ Miguel Cotto on Nov. 14.

Although there are reports that the combatants agreed to 50-50 split, and that Pacquiao, atleast, was originally guaranteed $20 million- plus their shares of any upside to the pay per view revenue-Konz said that a gag order is in place for both sides and that, under the circumtances, it would be inappropriate to address any numbers.

There are also reports that Mayweather has been guaranteed at least $20 million, that his name will lead the promotion as "Mayweather-Pacquiao," and that the revenue could push each side's earnings toward the $45 million mark.

Upon Arum's return -- he was expected back on American soil on Sunday -- the promoter told FanHouse last week that he would relay the modified terms to Schaefer as early as Monday.

Sources familiar with the negotiations told FanHouse that the talks are, indeed, ongoing, and that the possibility exists that the deal could be announced as early as Tuesday -- the longtime promoter's 78th birthday.

Mayweather reportedly had agreed to terms early last week before Arum traveled to Manila for his meeting with Pacquiao and Koncz, who strongly believes that Mayweather will be on board.

Pacquiao is coming off a 12th round stoppage of Miguel Cotto last Nov. 14 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, a bout in which he won the World Boxing Organization welterweight championship and erased fears that he is not a legitimate welterweight champion.

The promoters had targeted May 1 for the fight almost from the moment that Pacquiao stopped Cotto. But Pacquiao filed Tuesday to run for Congress in the Philippines and the election will be held on May 10.

Though there were reports that Arum was considering matching Pacquiao with new WBO super welterweight champion Yuri Foreman on March 13 in Dallas, that was a diversionary move and was never serious.

A survey team from Top Rank will inspect Dallas Cowboys Stadium as a possible venue. The MGM Grand Garden Arena and the New Orleans Superdome are also in the running to host the mega-fight of the year.

Former heavyweight champion Evander Holtfield has agreed to fight againts Francois Botha on January 16, 2010 in Kampa, Uganda for World Boxing Foundation title. The 41-year-old Francois Bothat is the present tile holder. Once again Holyfield on his unrelenting quest to become the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.

Botha has a career record of 47-4-3-1NC but the best rememberd are the four losses-all by KO to Michael Moorer, Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis and Wladimir Klitschko. Botha is a tough opponent but he only fought four times in the past seven years, winning three before fighting to a draw againts Pedro Carrion last month in Germany.

Holyfield are not active for just over a year, when this fight takes place, with decision losses to Sultan Ibragimov and Nikilay Valuev in his two most recent outings.

Negotiations for the mega-bout between Floyd "Money" Mayweather and Manny "Pac-Man" Pacquiao have been ongoing, with Golden Boy promotions' Richard Schaefer and Top Rank's Bob Arum representing each of the fighters considered pound-for-pound boxing's best, according to a source close to the process.

HBO has proposed a date on May 1, 2010 for the fight, which has not yet been discussed with team Pacquiao.
